Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 10:43:15 +0100 (BST) From: Philip WoodworthTo: gloss2@unixa.nerc-bidston.ac.uk 9 October 2001 To: GLOSS email lists Dear Colleague, a few things might be of interest: 1. We have started a library of country-reports which are intended to provide an overview of sea level measurements in each country or region (not of particular gauges so much - that information can go in the GLOSS Handbook product). The address is: http://www.pol.ac.uk/psmsl/reports.national+regional/ The layout of the web page follows the style of a similar page of country reports for GOOS. You will see that there are quite a number of reports already - these have been taken from reports to GLOSS Experts meetings, MedGLOSS reports etc. You might like to consider submitting updated versions, or please write new reports in the case of countries missing reports so far (please see the 'Information' notes). Your authorship will be respected in all cases. 2. You should have received a few weeks ago an email from Dr Lesley Rickards concering the IODE/GLOSS survey of 'data archaeology' of sea level records. That email contained a questionnaire asking for details of charts etc. which require data rescue. If you did not receive that email, please email Lesley at ljr@pol.ac.uk, and please send completed questionnaires back to Lesley as soon as possible. 3. We have started a library of Powerpoint presentations which people can adapt for their own GLOSS training purposes, see http://www.pol.ac.uk/psmsl/powerpoint/ At present there are 2 files in the library to provide markers, but please feel free to donate others. They should be self-contained and be suitable for other people to adapt for lectures, not filled with your jargon. Your names and logos etc. will be preserved in all cases. Send any files to psmsl@pol.ac.uk 4. A position paper on the status of sea level measurements in Africa has been prepared for the GOOS-Africa meeting in Nairobi in November. If anyone requires a copy, please mail psmsl@pol.ac.uk 5. Finally, we intend to set up soon a 'use-group' sort of electronic chat room so that people can discuss matters of concern to sea level studies e.g. what you think of recent papers. The idea started because it was evident that the publication process is so slow that it is difficult to comment on papers and get replies in print. However, it can obviously be extended to more technical issues, such as how to get more funds for GLOSS. We haven't yet got the system live (we obviously need ways to filter out spurious emails) but more news on that soon. Best wishes again Philip Woodworth Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, Bidston Observatory, Birkenhead, Merseyside CH43 7RA, U.K. Tel: +44 - 151 - 653 8633 Fax: 653 6269 POL web page: http://www.pol.ac.uk Email: plw@pol.ac.uk ===================================================================
