Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 12:38:41 +0200 From: CopernicusSubject: EGS + EUG = EGU Dear Colleagues, Hereby we would like to inform you that on 7 September 2002 the Councils of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and of the European Union of Geosciences (EUG) have established a joint association, the European Geosciences Union (EGU), encompassing now the full spectrum of geosciences and of planetary and solar system sciences. The new Union will unify subject coverage, avoid duplication and enhance scientific co-operation and collaboration in Europe; speak with a common voice and streamline European investment in science; strengthen the voice of the European geo- and space - sciences in discussions on a global scale; and provide a greater opportunity and broader scope for the exchange of ideas and for interdisciplinary collaboration. During the transition phase 2002 - 2003 membership and journal subscriptions in the EGS and in thh EUG will automatically be recognized by the EGU and vice versa. The Contact Address will be the addresses of the EGS Office in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany, and of the EUG Office in Strasbourg, France. The elected Members of Council of the EGU are included in the attachment. We hope that you welcome this merger, and that you will support the new association with regard to its prime aims: membership, meetings and conferences and publications. With kind regards, Peter Fabian (President of EGS and EGU) Max Coleman (President of EUG and Vice-President of EGU)
