F1- Eburnian and Pan-African Orogeny in the Precambrian domain (Anti-Atlas , Morocco)
- 23th to 27th of March 2002, 560 Euro
The Moroccan Anti-Atlas region south of the South Atlas Fault, contains two segments separated by the Anti-Atlas Major Fault. This two segments consist of (i) a 600-700 Ma old Pan-African segment with arc formations and post-collisional magmatism and (ii) a 2 Ga Eburnian segment in the south with Palaeoproterozoïc metamorphic and granitic basement outcropping within Neoproterozoïc to Palaeozoïc cover. This latter domain corresponds to the northern border of the West African craton. The central Anti-Atlas is a complex area with collided ophiolitic, "arc" and basin terranes. The geodynamic significance of the central and eastern Anti-Atlas during the Pan-African orogenesis is actually very debated. The purpose of this field trip is to provide an overview over the three structural units of the Anti-Atlas. A NE-SW transect will be presented from the Tazenakht Eburnian inlier (Western Anti-Atlas) to Pan-African Saghro inlier (Eastern Anti-Atlas) across the Bou-Azzer inlier (Central Anti-Atlas).
The new observations suggest that this classically subdivision is inappropriate in that Eburnian and Pan-African materials occur throughout the Anti-Atlas region. Many propositions will be seriously discussed.
Minimum: 18 participants
F2- Jurassic reef-rimmed carbonate shelves in the Agadir basin (western Atlas of Morocco): facies, diagenesis and basin development.
- 23th to 26 th March 2002, 320 Euro.
The Jurassic of the Agadir Basin displays a highly variable carbonate-clastic shelf series with marginal marine to outer shelf carbonate ramps and shelf interior basins. The field trip will deal with the Liassic to Portlandian facies, carbonate and clastic diagenesis, dolomitization, sedimentary geometries and the basin development in the western High Atlas. Special focus will be on depositional patterns and controls of the late Jurassic reef-rimmed carbonate shelves in this part of the Northwest African continental margin. We will visit representative late Jurassic outcrops between Tizgui N΄Chorfa (Witdoun), Ankloute/Immouzzer and Cap Ghir, which cover an East-West transect through the Late Jurassic basin.
Carbonate shelf series including reefs will be compared in terms of their original composition, sediment fabric and relative sea-level signals, which controlled diagenesis. Sequence stratigraphic aspects will be discussed as well.
Minimum : 10, maximum : 20 participants
F3- Alpine evolution of the Atlasic System in central Morocco
- 23 th to 27 th March 2002, 350 Euro
From the coastal town of El Jadida, the trip will cross the Moroccan central Meseta, and the north part of the central High Atlas mountains. The Alpine evolution of the Moroccan Atlasic domain will be illustrated through the following points :
- The Jurassic Rifting in the central high Atlas and the Tethys transgression in the west of Morocco : the sequence stratigraphy of the Lias-Dogger marine deposits from the platform area up to the "duke" region.
- The filling up and the senescence of the middle-upper Jurassic Atlasic rift : the syn-sedimentary tectonics, volcanism and the Dinosaurs footprints combined with the deltaic and continental red layers of the middle Jurassic up to lower Cretaceous.
- The Cretaceous Atlantic transgression : the sedimentary organization in the Aptian gulfs, and in the vast Cenomano-Turonian platform.
- The border basins of the High Atlas Chain in the process of formation in the upper Cretaceous-Tertiary : visit to the phosphate mines in the Khouribga region with the discussion of the biological crisis impact that occurred at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary.
- The Tertiary Atlasic compression : the structural connections between the High Atlas chain and its front area.
The trip will be finished by a guided visit into the historic city of Marrakech.
Minimum: 10, maximum: 24 participants
F4 - Plio-Quaternary formations of the coastal Meseta of Morocco (Larache-Safi): Sedimentology, Hydrogeology, Palaepedology, Neotectonics and Modern Sedimentary Dynamics.
- 23 th to 26 th March 2002, 350 Euro
In the coastal Meseta of Morocco, along a distance around 600 km between Larache (NE) and Safi (SW), the Plio-Quaternary formations are formed generally by the calcarenites complex (marine and eolian calcarenites with sporadic intercalated paleosols, shelly limestone and sandstone of the quartzitic substratum, limestone or gypsiferous beds according to the sectors.
During this trip, we will focus our interest on the mode of deposit of the Plio-Quaternary formations (interaction of the two dynamics: marine and eolian), their origin, their post-sedimentary evolution (diagenesis or/and pedogenesis), the geomorphology, the hydrogeology, the paleocoast, the neotectonic activity, which characterizes some sectors.
Minimum : 10, maximum : 24 participants

Abstracts
The abstracts of the 19th Colloquium of African Geology will be published in a special volume. The submitted text will have a presentation as simple as possible, then unformatted and without any code. Avoid words in upper case. Figures and tables will be submitted as separate files and scheduled to be printed on one column. Text files will be in MS-Word or compatible (RTF) format. Graphic files will be in TIF, JPG or BMP format (8 cm width). The latter will be kept to a minimum size and will never be above 1Gb. A high quality paper version will be sent at the same time as the electronic files; it will be used if electronic files fail. Text length will be max 500 words long, in Times New Roman 11 and, with figures and tables, will fit one A4 page.
Articles
1/ Communications presented at the colloquium could be submitted to an El Jadida special issue of the Journal of African Earth Sciences (JAES). The articles will be short, and concise. The aim of the issue is to give an overall view of the questions currently debated in African Geology. Manuscript will be submitted at the latest during the colloquium at El Jadida in March 2002 at the latest. Publication of this special issue will be fast and should occur at the end of 2002 or early 2003. Late submissions after the colloquium will not be accepted. The peer-review process will be that of JAES. Manuscripts will have a maximum length of 6 printed pages: a JAES page corresponds to 6000 characters (including space between words). Counting must include title, authors' names, addresses (with e-mail), abstract, text, captions and references. Tables and figures must fit into the 6 pages. Indicate in the cover letter the character counting and the scheduled place for figures and tables. For general instructions, see those of JAES. Manuscripts will be submitted at the El Jadida colloquium or will be sent earlier to:
Nasser Ennih, Département de Géologie, Faculté des Sciences, BP. 20,
24000 El Jadida, Morocco
2/ Another special issue will be limited to thematic articles on the geological correlations between Europe and northern Africa if that corresponding session will be a success (The extension to the Europe of the African plate and its connection with northern Africa). The instructions will be given at the Colloquium.
Authors should send for submission their completed manuscripts written in English (electronic and paper versions are required).
