2nd Announcement

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to a Workshop on

     Time-variable deformation and gravity fields:
            theory, observations and modelling

The wokshop is jointly organized by the International Association of Geodesy,
SSG 4.189, and by the Spanish Council for Scientific Research.

One focus of the worshop will be recent advances in the development of
dynamical models for the explanation of time-dependent deformation
and gravity fields. A second is the analysis and interpretation of new
observational constraints inferred from GPS, VLBI, tide-gauge and
gravity time series. A third involves predictions of temporal variations
of the geopotential coefficients in view of the satellite gravity missions
CHAMP and GRACE. The underlying processes may be as diverse as
isostatic adjustment to Pleistocene deglaciation, recent glacial and
sea-level changes, environmental loading, co- and postseismic adjustment,
tectonic processes and core-mantle interactions.

The Workshop will take place February 18 to 21, 2003 at Casa de
los Volcanes (scientific and cultural meeting place) in Jameos del Agua
on Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain.

For hotel reservation you should contact

Participants will stay at the aparthotel La Galea in Costa Tesguise for
20.74 EUR (double bed) or 26.45 EUR (single bed) per night (including
breakfast) and person. The hotel is located close to the beach. Its distance
both to the airport and to the meeting place is about 15 km. Free bus
transportation will be provided between aparthotel, meeting place and
lunch restaurant. Further details can be seen on the attached maps.
For general information on Lanzarote see http://www.lanzarote.com .

The preliminary program is as follows:

February 18: Afternoon reception, visit of Casa de los Volcanes and of
                     Lanzarote Geodynamics Station

February 19 and 20: Full-day sessions

February 21: Half-day session, optional excursion to southern part of  Island or
Full-day session, optional excursion on Saturday (depending on
                     number of  presentations)

In order to proceed with our planning, we kindly ask you to indicate to
both of us as soon as possible the following:

Attendance: Yes - possibly - no
Presentation: Yes and title - Yes but title not known yet - no
Excursion: Yes - possibly - no (approximately 55 EUR)

Deadline for registration will be January 15, 2003.

The International Association of Geodesy and the Ministry of Science and
Technology of Spain have announced limited funding in support of 'younger' scientists.
If you think that you or one of your colleagues may qualify for this support,
we ask you to send us an application including a short CV.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
