Dear Colleagues -

The 4-year term of the IAG/IAPSO Joint Working Group on Geodetic Effects
of Nontidal Oceanic Processes will come to an end at the IUGG meeting in
Sapporo, Japan this summer. Tadahiro Sato has proposed that the JWG submit
a resolution about the need for ocean-bottom pressure measurements, a
draft of which is given below. Please send me your comments on this
resolution and suggestions for additional resolutions by Friday, June 6.

Best regards,
Richard

Resolutions

Resolution 1. Ocean-Bottom Pressure Measurements

IAG/IAPSO Joint Working Group on Geodetic Effects of Nontidal Oceanic
Processes

Noting

1. that measurements over the oceans of the Earth^Òs time varying
gravitational field will soon be available from the CHAMP and GRACE
satellite missions,

2. that the gravitational field over the oceans and the pressure at the
bottom of the oceans are both sensitive to changes in the distribution of
mass within the oceans, and

Recognizing

1. the importance of validating and calibrating satellite data using in
situ measurements,

Recommends

1. that measurement campaigns be conducted to determine sea-floor
pressure variations using networks of ocean-bottom pressure recorders.
